IWD2024: Investing in Women Trumps Inspiring Inclusion

International Womens Day 2024

International Women’s Day is just around the corner again, and the theme this year is ‘Inspiring Inclusion’. Which is…great. However, here at Spectrum we’re all about intention AND action, not lip service – which is why we’re loving the UN’s theme for IWD 2024, INVEST IN WOMEN.

Let’s take an urgent look at just a few of the things UK companies should be investing in in 2024 and beyond, and which of our expert keynote and motivational speakers can bring their wisdom to your next event.

First up, we’ve got to talk about investing in opportunities for ethnically diverse women in leadership roles. According to the Bank of England, these awesome women are 25% more likely to quit a job due to a lack of career progression and bad experiences in the workplace, meaning they’re less likely to progress to leadership roles. Check out Ash Ahmad, an executive coach who knows all about making leadership more inclusive.

Then there’s creating pathways for progression of disabled women in business. A government report a couple of years ago revealed that they’ve got a 26% lower employment rate compared to non-disabled women and earn almost a quarter less than able-bodied men. Businesses need to get educated on what success and leadership really look like; traditional stereotypes about leadership often exclude disabled individuals. You can start with speakers like Most Influential Disabled Person In The UK 2023 Shani Dhanda and business leader Victoria Jenkins, who’ll drop some wisdom at your corporate events.

Finally, let’s get into the ongoing struggle for mothers in the workplace. Crazy but true – over half of mums report facing discrimination during pregnancy, maternity leave, or when they head back to work. One in five mums actually quit their job because of these experiences. For some serious insight, Michelle Gyimah, an executive coach, has got your back with strategies to make workplaces inclusive and supportive for mothers.

So, as we gear up for International Women’s Day 2024, let’s promise to crank up the volume on diverse voices, kick down those barriers, and invest in workplaces where all women can flourish.
